In a recent report released by the Sheller Center for Social Justice at Temple University Beasley School of Law, “Shortchanged: How Wage Theft Harms Pennsylvania’s Workers and Economy,” they made it known that wage theft is a big and pervasive problem within Pennsylvania. And, how did they come to this conclusion? Well, not only did the authors do their research, but they interviewed attorneys, workers, and other individuals across the state of Pennsylvania—people who were willing to come forward to shed light on an issue that is harming Pennsylvania’s economy.
When looking at the numbers, the Sheller Center for Social Justice at Temple University Beasley School of Law discovered that during just one work week:
- Nearly 400,000 Pennsylvanians do not receive the proper minimum wages.
- More than 300,000 workers are victims of overtime violations.
- Workers lose anywhere between $19-$32 million in wages.
When workers do not receive the wages they are deserved, it takes a tool on Pennsylvania’s economy. In fact, according to the report, the money that is not paid to workers deprives the state of millions of dollars of valued tax revenue every year. Plus, wage theft also harms other businesses—whether they are local or not, who do abide by the law and are already at a competitive disadvantage. Inevitably, employers who are committing wage theft are harming more than just the worker!
